How to Register for Self Assessment

If you do need to complete a Tax Return for the first time you will need to register for Self Assessment with HMRC, there are a number of ways you can do this depending on the reason you need to complete a Tax Return.

NOTE: You must register with HMRC no later than the 5th October following the end of the tax year, so if you need a 2011/12 Tax Return you must notify HMRC by the 5th October 2012. If you notify HMRC after this date you could face a penalty.

Registration Form

Register Online for Self employment or complete form CWF1 and post it to HMRC. When you register as self employed you will be registering to make Class 2 National Insurance contributions this will happen automatically as part of the registration process.

SA1

Not in a partnership or self employed you should complete form.

SA400

New partnership, the partnership and all partners will need to register for Self Assessment. This form must be completed and signed by a nominated partner to register the partnership with HMRC SA400

Individual partners will need to complete form SA401.
