How to Claim a Tax Refund

HMRC introduced the PAYE (pay as you earn) tax system some time ago, hoping to simplify the way personal income tax is paid. Even though it works to a large extent it is not infallible and it often happens that individuals pay more tax than they really should.

The process for claiming a tax refund can be straight forward, but that said it is important that we have full details and proof of all of your income and earnings along with details of the tax you have paid. This will help Tax Advantage process your refund accurately and quickly and potentially help you to claim back a larger amount of tax than you would be aware of.

Full time employees or part-time employees usually have their tax paid for by their employer on their behalf – your employer simply deducts the tax you pay from the salary amount and deposits the remainder in your bank account. In this case doing a tax claim back is very simple: ask your employer for the details of their tax office, explain why you think you paid too much tax and then forward the necessary evidence to the tax authorities.

If your claim is upheld the refund is simply added to your wages, current year, usually in the event an incorrect tax code has been applied against your pay.

Claiming Tax Back from Previous Years

For claiming from the previous tax year or earlier years you will need to submit a claim to HMRC along with P60/P45 and P11d (if applicable) and details of any other income you may have had. Also you will need to include any details of any allowable deductions, pension payments etc. HMRC will then calculate how much tax you should have paid on all of your income then deduct what you have already paid any surplus will be repaid either by cheque or directly into your bank account. Tax Advantage can deal with all of this for you ensuring that nothing is missed and the maximum amount of refund will paid to you. We also offer a free quick check service, please use the contact form to request details.

Regardless of your circumstances you may find that using a tax consultant to handle the claims process will save you time and money and could potentially help you to claim back a larger amount than you would be aware of.
